Cops launch special drive against drugs

Panaji: Goa police has launched a special drive against drugs along the north Goa coastal belt from Calangute, Bardez, to Keri in Pernem.Police teams have been conducting a surprise check at all shacks and other establishments to curb the drug business in the state.Speaking to TOI, inspector general of police (IGP) Jaspal Singh said that police will conduct special search operations along the coastal belt.”We will conduct weekly, fortnight and monthly checks depending on the situation to act against the narcotic trade,” Singh added During the recently-concluded winter session of the Goa legislative assembly, not just opposition MLAs, but even some BJP members urged the government to seriously deal with the drug menace in the state, and extended their full support in the fight against narcotics.After two youth died in north Goa last year, chief minister Manohar Parrikar had asked Goa police to act against the narcotic trade.Based on instructions from the chief minister, who also holds the home department portfolio, Goa police had booked around 150 narcotic cases and arrested around 150 persons.
