Cortalim farmers to be compensated

Almost four years after their paddy fields were inundated by saline water and their crops destroyed, due to damaged sluice gate, 98 Cortalim farmers would now be compensated for their loss under ‘Shetkari Adhar Nidhi’ scheme of the State government.
The Cabinet on Wednesday approved the proposal to compensate the farmers, whose paddy fields were damaged in December 2008. The total financial implication is Rs 2.8 lakh.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said that during his visit to Cortalim constituency, the villagers expressed their unhappiness towards the government for failing to compensate them even after four years.
“The amount was not so big. I don’t understand, why the previous government did not release the funds,” he stated.
The Agriculture Department in 2008 had evaluated the loss but since there was no financial provision made by the department and the district administration, the matter was, therefore, referred to government for release of fund under ‘Shetkari Adhar Nidhi’ scheme 2011.
“The government had approved the proposal under the scheme as a special case though the damage was caused prior to notification of the scheme,” the cabinet note reads.     [H]
