‘Cow vigilantes sponsored by govt’

Panaji: Former member of Parliament Francisco Sardinha on Tuesday alleged that cow vigilantes are “sponsored by this government” and said that they cannot take the law into their own hands.”Who are they to give a certificate (that the meat is being transported legally)?” he asked. “Are they doctors? We have the police if at all they feel something is going wrong. They can bring this to the notice of the government. There’s no need for vigilantes.” He was addressing mediapersons on Tuesday.Sardinha said that the beef scarcity has deliberately been created to allow prices to soar. He added that it is a staple food for minorities and half the tourists who visit Goa.
He said that while tourists may not mind paying more, the government shouldn’t turn local beef eaters into tourists in their own state, he said.”The government wants to satisfy its RSS bosses,” Sardinha, a former minister for animal husbandry, said.He added that the fact that the government abbatoir, which used to make crores in profit, is not functioning, is encouraging illegal slaughter elsewhere.Sardinha said that if the government dares to ban beef in Goa, “we will not keep quiet”. Commenting on NGOs, Sardinha said that while some do good work, others “blackmail and extort money”.The GPCC’s principal general secretary, Altinho Gomes, said that till date, no FIR has been filed against Sadhvi Saraswati for her public statement that those who eat beef must be hanged.
“Statements like these destroy the social fabric of the state,” he said. Gomes said that if chief minister Manohar Parrikar is serious about the beef issue, he should file an FIR against her.”The (beef) issue is only raised during festival time,” Gomes said.Meanwhile, Sardinha welcomed the state government’s move to revoke consent to operate in view of coal pollution and excess coal handling at MPT.However, he said that the government waited till people’s health was affected and till they protested. “Good governance should ensure that precautions are taken before,” he said. The proposed coal hub has been opposed by several villages across the state.
