Cuncolim police response to incident comes under fire

The daring daylight robbery in the foreign currency exchange office sent shock waves amongst Chinchinim villagers, who directed their ire at the Cuncolim police for turning up late at the spot.
Local resident and Congress general secretary Joe Dias has demanded the immediate resignation of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar over the spate in theft cases in the state and failure of the police machinery to reign in on the assailants.
As news spread in the village over the robbery in broad daylight, residents blamed the Cuncolim police for coming late. Former Chinchinim Sarpanch Royen Viegas said the police vehicle came to the spot after a long time. He demanded that the government should immediately look into the problems faced by the Cuncolim police.
Another citizen Ashok Vernekar wondered why it took the police long time to reach the venue.
Locals pointed out that while the incident occurred at around 3.10 pm, the police came only at around 4 pm.
When asked to throw light on the police response to the situation, DySP Mohan Naik denied there was any delay on part of the police.  He said the police control van rushed to the spot after receiving information from the control room at Panjim. [H]
