Cuncolim’s Golden jubilee projects hit roadblock
Golden Jubilee signature projects mooted by the Cuncolim Municipal Council a year ago have hit a roadblock.
Blame it on the change in political guard or simply official apathy, the two projects – a health club and beautification of the Chieftain’s memorial park – were mooted during the tenure of then Cuncolim MLA Joaquim Alemao are mired in controversies and have not moved ahead since the last one year.
While the Rs 1.60 crore health club kicked up a row from day on after the project came under the scanner of the election authorities, the Rs 40 lakh Chieftain’s memorial park beautification project is yet to see light of the day. What had given a new twist to the Health Club project was a police complaint lodged by CMC Chief Officer Shivaji Dessai that an unknown person was executing the project when the election code of conduct had come into force. While the Cuncolim police is still investigating the case, the Civic body appears mum on why the project is not taken to its logical conclusion till date.
As far as the Chieftain’s memorial park is concerned, the Chief Officer says there’s no politics behind stalling the project. “The project could not take off because of procedural lapses committed by the office. The Civic body has now forwarded the file to the Town and Country Planning department for necessary permissions”, the CO said.
It is not known whether the Civic body had unearthed the procedural flaws only after the project was tendered and awaiting execution.
Incidentally, the Chief Officer says that the park beautification project will be taken up after TCP’s clearances. He, however, has no answer whether these two signature projects would ever see light of the day and whether the Civic body has any alternate projects in mind. [H]
