Curtorim Gymkhana trounced Salcete Football Club 3-1 in a 9th Round First Division League football match at Cansaulim Sports Complex, Tuesday. Curtorim led 2-1 at half time.
The highlight of the day was brilliant brace by striker Neves Noronha.
Salcete began on an aggressive note and held a slight edge over their opponents. However, Curtorim took the lead against the run of play in the very sixth minute when winger Clinton Niasso beautifully headed home off a well executed cross by Valzuniho Fernandes.
Spurred by the early success, Curtorim piled on the pressure and their efforts materialized in the 15th minute when striker Neves slotted past rival goalkeeper Reagan Juliao, who unnecessary came out of his position, allowing ample time for the rival attacker to punt the ball in.
Stunned by the reverse, Salcete tried to reduce the deficit and put pressure on the Curtorim defence and the attempts almost paid dividends but striker Getesh Borkar’s header hit the crossbar much to the dismay of Salcete supporters.
Salcete reduced the deficit when versatile midfielder Francis Andrade beat the rival goalkeeper with a left-footed drive off a well executed flag-kick taken by Rahul Fernandes in the 42nd minute.
After the break, Curtorim put up a better display and breached the rival defence with well orchestrated raids. Curtorim could have increased the lead but striker Neves Noronha shot wide from close range.
Neves drove the final nail into the rival coffin to complete his brace.
With this win, Curtorim have secured the second spot in the league table with 21 points from nine matches with Laxmi Prasad Sports Club, who have the same number of points topping the table thanks to a better a goal average. Salcete Club have seven points from the same number of encounters. [H]
