Curtorim VP rejects construction file
Bowing to the wishes of the gram sabha, the Curtorim Village Panchayat on Friday rejected the construction file of Ms Talak Homes & Estate.
At the panchayat meeting held this morning, the panchayat body rejected the construction file of the real estate builder which was submitted to the village panchayat in January 2008. Curtorim Deputy Sarpanch J Santano Rodrigues told Herald over the telephone that the panchayat has rejected the file as per the demands of the gram sabha.
“The panchayat body has gone with the resolution of the gram sabha. We had suggested to the builder during last meeting to reduce the height of the building, but the proposal did not find favour with him. The panchayat had no option than to reject the construction file”, Santano said.
The panchayat decision comes against the backdrop of the High Court directions to take a decision on Talak’s construction file within a period of 12 weeks.
At the gram sabha meeting held on November 25, the building project had come under stiff opposition from the villagers, who demanded its rejection on grounds that the village does not have the required infrastructure and that the project would cause environmental damage. While fearing that the project, if approved, would invited hordes of housing projects in the village, the gram sabha had pointed out that the project is located in a highly eco-sensitive zone, which comprises of a forested hill range, ancient tribal settlements and the rich paddy fields of “Waingnal”, adding that these existing assets of great economic and social importance cannot co-exist within the proposed urban settlement.
