Cutorim Gymkhana overcame Goa Police 2-0 to continue their unbeaten run in the First Division league at DSYA ground, Curtorim, Saturday.
Making the most of their attacking 4-4-2 formation, Curtorim created umpteen opportunities upfront and surged ahead through Welson Fernandes made no mistake in slotting past Police goalkeeper Rupesh Kamat after receiving a pass from centre forward Tryson D'Costa in the 19th minute.
Spurred by the early success, Curtorim Gymkhana raised the tempo and nearly doubled the lead but Rosario Fernandes blasted wide from close range.
Goa Police who lost to Salcete Club 1-2 in their previous match kept on raiding the rival box but could not find any penetrative move to unsettle Curtorim Gymkhana’s rhythm. Goa Police had two golden chance but Paresh Morje and Minguel Baretto were the worst culprits as they muffed sitters.
Crossing over, Curtorim continue to dictate terms and threatened to dismantle the rival citadel with raids but were unlucky as their forwards ran out ideas after reaching the rival danger zone.
Goa Police kept on attacking but the alert rival defence marshaled by central defender Alleluia Fernandes was rock solid and thwarted rival attacks with neat tackles.
Goa Police had a golden chance to reduce the deficit when Blaise picked the ball and shot wide from close range much to the disbelief to the Police supporters.
Curtorim coach Roque Carneiro brought in Roy Albuquerque in place of Trysen D’Costa and the move bore fruit in the 88th minute when substitute Roy picked up the ball from Velson and the former unleashed a 35-yard shot which crashed into the net.
Stunned by the double blows, Goa Police went all-out in search of the reducer but failed to get past the rival strong defence.
With this win, Curtorim Gymkhana have tallied 18 points from eight matches while Goa Police have four points from he same number of matches. [H]
