Davorlim villagers stop pipeline work

Davorlim villagers on Wednesday stopped work on the raw water pipeline project for industries in the Verna Industrial Estate in protest against the laying of the pipeline through a traditional water nullah by the Water Resources Department
Agitated villagers forced work stoppage this evening after it was pointed out that WRD was taking the pipeline through the traditional nullah.
The villagers pointed out that they have no objection to the raw water pipeline project, but asserted that they will not allow the traditional nullah to be destroyed by the pipeline.
Davorlim sarpanch Herculano Niasso told newsmen that the WRD has virtually buried the traditional nullah with the raw water pipeline and demanded the restoration of the traditional water channel. “If the water nullah is allowed to be buried, it will result in flooding and also affect cultivation of crops in the vicinity,” he said, while demanding that the raw water pipeline is shifted towards the government acquired land.
Niasso said the villagers have briefed local MLA and Fisheries Minister, Avertano Furtado, on their demand and inspection of the site is expected on Thursday evening by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar along with the local MLA.  [H]
