Dempo dazzle in 2-0 win over Churchill

Living up to their champions tag, the in-form Dempo SC registered an emphatic 2-0 victory over formidable Churchill Brothers in their encounter of the GFA’s Kingfisher Professional Football League at Nehru Stadium, Fatorda on Monday.

Young Cliffton Gonsalves scored in the 24th minute to provide lead for Dempo, while their new foreign recruit and former English Premier League star Rohan Ricketts scored the other goal in the 88th minute.

The match started on a cautious note with both the teams testing each others strength for a while, and then began a flow of passes on both the sides.

Dempo scored their first goal when Nickson Castanha moved into the box after getting past a couple of rival defenders and then nicely chipped the ball on the left to Nicolay Borges who followed the move. Finding himself in a difficult angle Borges wisely passed the ball to better-placed Cliffton Gonsalves who slammed it past the Churchill Brothers keeper Felix D’Souza.

Immediately thereafter Churchill Brothers reacted with two good moves—one of which could have culminated into a goal had the frame work not come in the way of the team.

Churchill’s Alesh Sawant hoodwinked the strong Dempo defence on sheer speed and then unleashed a powerful shot which Dempo goalkeeper Tyson Caido only managed to touch his fingers after advancing a bit to cover the angle.

But the ball travelled onwards in the air towards the goal and kissed the horizontal bar and came back into play. Striker Thangjam Singh, sensing a chance rushed forward and sent a right footer which hit the post and came back into play.

The match was then played on equal footing with Churchill Brothers pressing hard for the equaliser but Dempo’s strong defence comprising of Aniston Fernandes, Samir Naik and substitute Covan Lawrence stood their ground well and foiled all the attempts made by the opponents.

Dempo goalkeeper Tyson Caido was outstanding as he nullified at least five tries from the rival strikers.

In the last ten minutes of play, Dempo launched some counter moves and just when the match was about to go into the add-on time, Rohan Athony Ricketts scored a beautiful goal by sending a header to the far corner of the rival nets off a cross from hardworking Godwin Franco.

In the added time of four minutes Churchill Brother failed to pose any threat to Dempo defence and were left licking their wounds as they conceded a 2-0 defeat. [NT]
