Setting 2015 deadline for ensuring clean and green state, the PWD Minister, Mr Ramkrishna Dhavalikar on Friday said that issues regarding sanitation and solid waste management will be addressed by 2014.
Speaking after inaugurating the Mormugao taluka-level workshop on ‘Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan’, a sponsored scheme under the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation of government of India at a function held at MPT Institute in Vasco, Mr Dhavalikar assured the people of Mormugao, Vasco, Dabolim and Cortalim constituencies of providing additional 25 MLD water by 2013. He stressed that the state government has laid stress on acquiring open spaces in the village panchayat areas for undertaking solid waste management.
The Power Minister, Mr Milind Naik, Environment and Forest Minister, Ms Alina Saldanha, Vasco MLA, Mr Carlos Almeida, Dabolim MLA, Mr Mauvin Godinho, Law Commission chairman, Mr Narendra Savoikar, Sancoale Zilla Panchayat member, Ms Aparna Naik, Cortalim Zilla Panchayat member, Ms Cynthia D’Silva, PWD chief engineer, Mr Dattaprasad Borkar besides other officials of the PWD were also present on the occasion.
The Minister for Power and Housing, Mr Milind Naik said that besides the elected representatives, the common man is duty-bound to maintain the clean and green environment while the Minister for Environment and Forest Minister, Ms Alina Saldanha lamented disregard for environment prevalent even among educated people in the state. She called upon locals to respect the nature adding that proper awareness among youngsters can change the present scenario and make Goa free from the garbage menace.
The Vasco MLA, Mr Carlos Almeida said that the participation of people in the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan is quintessential. He urged people to support this drive in order to make Goa a better place.
The Dabolim MLA, Mr Mauvin Godinho voiced satisfaction over various schemes initiated for the benefit of the people. He also supported initiatives undertaken under Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan in order to motivate communities and Panchayati Raj institutions to promote sustainable sanitation facilities.
Earlier, the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan was inaugurated at the hands of Mr Dhavalikar by lighting the traditional lamp. [NT]
