Don Bosco lift Sporting U-12 trophy

 

Tournament top-scorer, Aman Govekar blasted home the match-winner as Don Bosco HS, Panjim edged past St Britto’s HS 1-0 in the finals to emerge champions of 2nd all-Goa under-12 Sporting Clube de Goa football tournament at Don Bosco ground, here, Saturday.
The schools were divided into two groups with the team’s playing on a league basis. Don Bosco finished top of group “A”, while St Britto’s finished second. In group “B” Loyola topped and Fr Agnel came  second. All four teams qualified for the semi-finals.
Loyola bagged the third place after overcoming Fr Agnel Pilar 3-2 via the tie-breaker in the third and fourth place play-off.  The match ended 1-1 at full time with Samward Pereira scoring for Loyola and Nikhil Shetty netting for Fr Agnel.
Don Bosco took home Rs 5,000 and a trophy while St Britto’s had to be content with Rs 3,000 and a trophy. Loyola collected Rs 1,500 while Fr Agnel took home Rs 1,000. The participants were given certificates and the two finalists were given full playing kit.
Sporting competitions director Anthony Vaz, Joao Pereira and Ashwin Crasto refereed the matches.
Individual prizes — Most outstanding goalkeeper: Neil Miranda (Loyola). Best defender: Baggio Mascarenhas (St Britto’s). Best midfielder: Velburn Quadros (St Britto’s). Best striker: Shannon Viegas (Don Bosco). Highest goal scorer: Aman Govekar (Don Bosco).  
Fr Dominic Savio Fernandes, principal of Don Bosco HS, was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of Fr Egidio Fernandes, Sporting’s Mathew Gonsalves (captain), Freiman Peixote, Angel Berlanga, Juanfri, Abhijeet Chatterjee, Angelo Albuquerque and Carlton D’Mello. Eddie Noronha compered. Sporting Clube CEO Victor Fernandes proposed the vote of thanks. [H]
