DoP extends date to submit ward delimitation reports

Panjim: Directorate of Panchayats on Monday extended the deadline to submit the detailed ward delimitation reports for the 2017 Panchayat polls by four days. The reports were earlier due on April 18 but panchayats have sought more time from the department to tally the population.Speaking to Herald,Panchayats Director Sandhya Kamat said, “The actual date for submitting this report was April 18 but as the process is not complete we have decided to give an extension.”She added, “As per the data, wards have increased in almost 17 panchayats due to increase in population. In some wards have increased from 7 to 9 and from 5 to 7. Till today we have received reports from 156 panchayats of the 186 which are due to go for elections. We are verifying the figure of increase in population as I have been receiving phone calls that the population has increased but as per the 2011 census the population was less.”However, the department has been mum on whether the panchayat polls are on schedule or are likely to be postponed. Sources said the government is likely to postpone the panchayat elections by a month in view of the by-polls.The director, however, refused to comment on this and said. “I do not know anything about the dates of Panchayat polls.”[H]
