Drive against illegal sand mining: over 150 canoes seized in Pernem

In one of the biggest drive against illegal sand mining in the Pernem taluka, more than 150 canoes and several trucks were seized by the government machinery on Thursday.

The drive of seizing the canoes used in extraction of sand illegally at Kiranpani and Balkhazan in the Pernem taluka began early morning on Thursday under the supervision of Pernem deputy collector, Ms Meena Naik Goltekar, Captain of Ports officers, Mines department officials, etc.
According to the information available from a Captain of Ports official, 10 out of the 73 canoes seized at Kiranpani and seven out of the 81 canoes which were seized at Balkhazan were registered with them.
Police personnel have been deployed in the areas where the seized canoes are kept to prevent any misuse. The canoes are likely to be towed away to some other location on Friday. Around 19-odd trucks which were allegedly used for transporting the sand were also seized.
The situation remained tense in the areas from where the canoes were seized, however there was no untoward incident reported due to the presence of the strong police force, according to the information available from the sources.
Locals in the Pernem taluka are a worried lot as illegal sand mining going in the Tiracol river has already led to loss of several thousand square meters of fertile land and several coconut and other plants which have collapsed into the river water due to the widening of the river which has been caused due to erosion of the banks.
