Dy Collector orders opening of shops selling essential commodities

Vasco: Deputy Collector and Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Mormugao, Sachin Dessai, on Monday, ordered opening of all the shops, in Zuarinagar containment zone, selling essential commodities.

A meeting was convened by Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha at her Upasnagar party office on Monday evening in order to chalk out a plan for providing essential items to the people in the containment zone at Zuarinagar.

The locals had raised demand for essential items after taking to streets on Sunday, alleging failure on part of the district administration to provide the essentials items.

The meeting was also attended by Mormugao mamlatdar Saiesh Naik, superintendent of police, South, Pankaj Kumar Singh, Verna PI Mohan Gaude, deputy sarpanch of Sancoale Kavita Kamal, panch members Ramakant Borkar, Tulsidas Naik, Narayan Naik, Govind Lamani and others.

Panch member Ramakant Borkar raised concern over the collection of throat swab samples by a private agency engaged by reputed company on its own in Zuarinagar.

“Who will be held responsible, if the swab tests are not authentic? Most of the people who work with the company hail from Mangor Hill and Zuarinagar containment zones. The unauthentic test reports could prove risk to the lives of other people,” said Borkar.

He praised health officer of Cortalim primary health centre Dr Socorro Quadros for working tirelessly in entire Cortalim constituency.

He demanded for a dedicated ambulance facility in the containment zone to meet the emergencies.

Panch member Narayan Naik drew attention to various problems being faced by the people in Zuarinagar containment zone.

He highlighted the issue of empty ATMs and added that the people are facing a lot of inconvenience due to unavailability of toilet facility in the containment zone.

Another panch member Tulsidas Naik obtained permission from the deputy collector to provide necessary help to the people in the containment zone from Sancoale panchayat.

The Cortalim MLA clarified that the swab collection agency engaged by the particular company is a reputed one.

She said that the agency has obtained permission from state government to collect swab samples of the labourers working with the company.

She laid stress on the supply of essential items to the people in the containment zone and instructed the deputy collector to mark the entry and exit points.

She decided to provide a list of volunteers appointed by the panch members of Sancoale panchayat to supply essential items to the people.

She also requested the deputy collector to make available mobile toilets at the containment zone.

She further urged him to direct the electricity and water departments to grant permissions to open the toilets which are already in the completion stage at the containment zone.

The deputy collector Dessai while replying to the queries raised by the panch members said that “A KTC bus will be made available for Zuarinagar containment zone to transport women with their children to administer immunization doses at the health centres. People need to contact the designated officer deputed at the containment zone.”

He ordered for the opening of all ‘essential’ shops in the Zuarinagar containment zone.

“During the initial stage, rice and daal will be provided by the district administration to the people, and thereafter essential kits will be distributed to all the people,” informed Dessai.

Superintendent of Police, South, Pankaj Kumar Singh decided not to allow outsiders in the containment zone.

However, it was decided that any person willing to give essentials to the people residing in the containment zone can be allowed to do so at the barricades. [NT]
