Emphatic Salgaocar thrash listless Dempo

A formidable Salgaocar FC thrashed a listless Dempo 5-1 to garner full points in Kingfisher Pro League football match at Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, Tuesday.
For Salgaocar, Marcus Mascarenhas and Aslon Oliveira netted a brace each with winger KM Meetei also getting on the scoresheet. Although, Nigerian striker Koko Sakibo reduced the margin it proved to be a mere consolation in yet another embarrassing defeat for Dempo.
Everything went smoothly for the green brigade with coach Peter Vales cleverly utilizing the pace of Marcus Mascarenhas, Aslon Oliveira and winger Godfrey D'Silva to harass the laden-footed rival defense. It did not take much time for Salgaocar to open the scoring with Godfrey taking midfielder Cajetan Fernandes’ through pass to easily get past the Dempo left back and push it for Marcus to find the net in the 12th minute. Three minutes later, Marcus was denied by Dempo keeper Tyson Caiado but with the defense all at sea, Salgaocar skipper Bevan D'Mello and Aslon combined well to set up left-winger K M Meetei to double the advantage with a rasping drive from the edge of the box in the 15th minute.
Dempo’s non-functioning midfield made the job easy for their arch-rivals. Salgaocar medio Cajetan was in total control of the proceedings and only a last ditch effort by Marcus prevented Aslon from scoring on the half hour mark.
With Salgaocar in complete control, speedy Aslon finally got his reward in the 39th minute, firing a low shot which went through the outstretched body of rival goalkeeper Tyson off a fine through pass by hardworking Cajetan. A minute later, Cajetan once again found space in the Dempo defence manned by Shalum Pires and Stephen Offei to send Marcus through inside the box and the striker relayed to waiting Aslon to tap in and give Salgaocar a four-goal lead going into the lemon break.
After resumption, Dempo showed signs of improvement with striker Koko forcing his way past Salgaocar defender Nicolau Colaco to force a good block from rival goalkeeper Pawan Kumar, who did not have to make a single save in the entire first session. Dempo coach Mathew D'Costa made changes bringing in defender Selwyn Fernandes for Marcus and striker Joy Ferrao for Myron Fernandes and it created some sharpness in the attack, but Koko appeared to be rusty as he frittered away easy goal scoring chances in the 69th and 70th minutes, shooting wide from inside the box. With Dempo attacking, Salgaocar were mostly on the defensive and it allowed winger Romeo Fernandes to burst from the right flank to find substitue Nicholas Borges, who pushed to Koko to  bulge the net from close range with 10 minutes remaining for the final whistle.
Dempo’s urgency in wiping off the deficit created panic in the Salgoacr defense with stopper back Dinseh Thungajam commiting an unnecessary foul on Koko which resulted in a penalty. But to everyone’s surprise Koko’s tame effort was saved by diving Pawan in the 82nd minute to take the fight out of their beleaguered rivals.
Deep into injury time, Salgaocar netted the fifth when substitue winger Royston D'Sousa's measured cross met with a ferocious volley by Marcus to complete a miserable week for Dempo.  [H]
