‘EU is similar to India’s diversity’

Panaji: There are around 50,000 Indian students presently in the European Union. While the numbers studying in the UK are on the decline, those seeking higher education in the other European countries are only rising each year, Cesare Onestini, minister, deputy head of delegation of the European Union to India told presspersons on the sidelines of the 22nd European Union Film Festival.When asked about the effect Brexit would have on the European Union, he told TOI, “EU and UK are trying to work out the best possible solution for both of us. But for the time being and for the next year-and-a-half, UK is still a full member and full participant of the EU, so it’s difficult to comment as we don’t know what it will look like in the end”.
He asked cinema lovers to find similarities between the linguistic and ethnic diversity within the European Union and India, both of which are very strongly rooted in culture, but with very diverse and rich traditions in the fields of arts, cinema and literature.Vice-chairman, ESG, Rajendra Talak said the European Union film festival that brings the finest and most riveting films from Europe is another opportunity for film lovers in the state to be exposed to good films. He said he looks forward to making the festival a permanent event in the state.The film festival is being organized by the delegation of the European Union, directorate of film festivals, entertainment society of India and ministry of information and broadcasting. Twenty-two award winning European films will be screened at auditorium 1 in the Maquinez Palace till July 8. [TOI]
