Exciting final on cards as Dempo take on Sarvodaya

Dempo CC made light work of the target of 148 set by Salgaocar SC, winning the first semi-final of the GPL4 T20 tournament by 4 wickets at GCA grounds, Porvorim on Saturday.
Salgaocar, who were bowled out for 147, managed to give the initial thrust to their innings through Ravikant Shukla (48) and Ashish Yadav (47) who added 55 for the 4th wicket. Though Keenan Vaz (19) and Shukla had earlier stitched a 45-run stand for the 3rd wicket, lack of partnerships did Salgaocar in.
Dempo bowlers picked wickets at regular intervals to put the brake on Salgaocar’s progress. Sher Bahadur Yadav was the star bowler for Dempo as he picked 4 for 29 while Sahil Dhuri and Khatil Sahabuddin claimed 3 and 2 wickets respectively. Rajesh Powar took 1 wicket.
In reply, Dempo CC’s chase was rocked by the early loss of star opener Sagun Kamat, who was snapped by Harshad Gadekar for 4. Thereafter, Amogh Dessai and Sahabuddin steadied the Dempo innings with a productive stand of 47, with the latter going on to top-score with 39. Vishal Singh, who scored 31 and Yogesh Takawale (34*) then ensured that Dempo’s chase was on track as short partnerships towards the close paved the way for a place in the final. Though the victory was sealed by Dempo in the 20th over, it was achieved with 3 balls and 4 wickets to spare.
Overall, the job was well done and Dempo marched into the finals. For Salgaocar, Ashish Yadav with 2 for 16 was the main wicket-taker as he went on to win the man of the match award for his all-round effort despite being on the losing side. Harshad Gadekar, Gurinder Singh and Atith Naik managed only 1 wicket each.
In the second semi-final, Sarvodaya Royals managed to clinch a narrow 14-run victory over Goa Sports Academy to reach the finals.
Sarvodaya scored 134 for 8 in their allotted 20 overs with Saurabh Dubey top-scoring with 45. GSA lost the plot and managed only 120 for 7 as Sufiyan Alam played a lone hand of 47 before being run out. Shadab Jakati starred with a 3-wicket haul for Sarvodaya to set up victory.
The finals will be played on Sunday (March 3) between Dempo CC and Sarvodaya Royals. [NT]
