Families distraught as both engineers laid to rest
A day after the shocking bus tragedy at Khed, the funeral mass for both the deceased marine engineers took place on Wednesday.
Jose Regan Fernandes and Bento D'Costa, colleagues at Mumbai-based V-Shipping company who were attending a four-month training course were on the Mumbai-bound bus that plunged into the Jagbudi river near Khed in Maharashtra's Ratnagiri district in the early hours of Tuesday where a total of 37 persons, including 15 from Goa lost their lives. The body of the two deceased arrived in Goa at 2am.
The funeral cortege left Regan's house in Vanelim, Colva, at 4.15pm to Our Lady of Merces Church, Colva, while the funeral cortege left Bento's house at Calcondem in Navelim at 3.15pm to Our Lady of Rosary Church, Navelim. Hundreds of friends and relatives gathered at the residences of the two boys and the notes of the brass band added to the sombre mood.
The bereaved relatives and neighbours spoke highly of Regan and the hardships he and his mother, a widow, faced while he was growing up. Regan had recently married on January 13. "Regan meant the world to Maria (Regan's mother) and everything she did, prayed for or wanted was for her son and we are at a loss for words. One cannot begin to imagine what his young and recently-married wife must be going through," said his neighbour who had come to offer her condolences.
Relatives and friends of Bento, who did his schooling at Loyola High School in Margao, spoke about the kind and passionate boy he was and how his life and career was just beginning to grow. He had a full, strong future ahead which was cut shot. Family members while offering their condolences to Bento's father Custodio and the rest of his immediate family expressed their disbelief and how the bus driver could have been so careless and reckless, on account of which so many lives had been lost.
