Farmers renew plea for return of land

Farmers from Rawanfond-Navelim on Tuesday renewed their plea for the return of their agricultural fields acquired by the government in the past.

The farmers, who had launched a sustained battle against the rehabilitation of traders in the fields at Rawanfond, during the last five years, have pinned their hopes on Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar and local MLA and Fisheries Minister, Avertano Furtado to revert their fields back to their possession.

“ For five years now, we have been fighting to save our fields and are now sought to be displaced by the authorities. These fields were cultivated by our ancestors and we are committed to cultivate them in future too”, vowed activist Claudious.

He pointed out that the Navelim MLA had promised in his election manifesto to revert the acquired fields back to the farmers. “We request both Parrikar and Avertano to take our long pending demand to the logical conclusion’, he said.

The farmers had called on the Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar during his visit to the Ravindra Bhavan last month and apprised him of their demand. A delegation later had discussions with the Chief Minister in Panjim, but they are yet to receive a firm assurance that the government would revert the fields back to the farmers. [H]
