Father of rape victim plans hunger strike
Desperate over the failure of the police to nab the perpetrator of the crime and frustrated at the failed assurances by the politicians, the father of the Vasco rape victim has finally decided to go on indefinite hunger strike from Wednesday.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, the girl’s father stated that almost a month has passed and there is no breakthrough in the case. “When I along with Mormugao MLA and Power Minister Milind Naik and other parents had met Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar at the Secretariat at Porvorim, I had informed the chief minister that I will go on hunger strike from February 13 as Crime Branch failed to nab the culprit,” stated the father.
“The chief minister had sought eight days time to solve the case. However, as requested by Parrikar, I waited for eight days and since there is no outcome I have decided to go on hunger strike from February 13,” informed the father.
“On February 11, I along with the power minister and other parents once again met Parrikar to know the outcome of the eight days period,” he said.
The father further said that Parrikar called them to his office on February 12. “However, Parrikar called Naik’s PA and informed him that it was not possible to meet them as he was busy,” said the father.
“My child’s case is being hushed up just because I am poor and do not have any support,” claimed the father. “There might have been other such incidents in other parts of Goa which the parents might have hushed up the case after accepting bribes,” he stated.
“I am not afraid to come in the open and go on hunger strike as long as my daughter gets justice. I am not for money but I want justice,” added the father.
“My children have not attended the school for the last one month and no one from the school or the management visited us to know about the condition of my children,” said the father.
“When I go on hunger strike from Wednesday, I know that the government will try and arrest me for which I am ready. I have already informed all the authorities concerned about the hunger strike,” added the father. He alleged that the Crime Branch is aware of the whereabouts of the culprit, but are dragging their feet to arrest him. [H]
