Finally, council decides rent rates for tenants
During a special council meeting held on Tuesday, the Mormugao municipal council (MMC) finalized the long-pending settlement of rent rates of tenants using municipal premises, an issue which has been unsolved for almost 15 years.
The council had found it difficult to finalize the sum of rupees to be collected as there were backlogs of over 15 years. The council took the decision that the four buildings of commercial and residential premises belonging to MMC including Dr Mukund building, Pt Dharmanand Kossambe building, Dr Borges building and Municipal market building, will be charged 12 per sq m for commercial premises and 5 per sq m for residential premises. The parties will be sent letters to pay the backlog of 15 years, since the time the rent was raised and they had refused to pay. MLA and local councillor, Carlos Almeida said, "After discussion, we decided the amount which is nominal and the parties concerned should not face any difficulty to pay the dues." The rate of interest for the amount that was earlier decided at 18% is now reduced to 12%. An agreement will also be made that after every three years, the rate of interest will be increased by 10%.
