Fire guts restaurant in Candolim

A fire partially gutted a restaurant in Candolim causing estimated damage worth three lakh on Wednesday morning. Nobody was hurt in the incident.
The fire was first noticed by a passerby who saw smoke from under the locked shutters of the Spice Garden restaurant located on the Candolim main road. He alerted the owners who stay next to the restaurant who then informed the fire brigade at 8.34am. The Pilerne fire brigade then rushed to the spot and put out the blaze within an hour. A fire tender from the Panaji fire station also rushed to the spot, but by then the fire had been put out.
Pilerne station fire officer Namdeo Dhargalkar said that they had a tough time fighting the blaze as the shutters were locked from inside because of which they couldn't enter. The restaurant owners had reportedly locked the shutters from inside and slept in an adjoining room from where they escaped through another entrance.
The cause of the fire is being investigated. Dhargalkar said that property including sofas, chairs, tables, refrigerators, TV, etc, were gutted in the fire, while some cloth bags and other articles which were also being sold alongside the restaurant were also damaged and burnt. [TOI]
