Fish vendor killed in Khandepar mishap


A 32-year-old fish vendor died, while another person was seriously injured when a group of fish vendors from Valpoi travelling in a jeep met with an accident at Khandepar-Ponda in the wee hours of Sunday.
According to Ponda Police, the accident occurred at about 3.30 am when the goods carrier jeep (GA-04-T-1755) which was proceeding from Valpoi to Margao collided against a stationary lorry (HR-55-D-8455) at Khandepar. 
Police said the jeep had six occupants and was proceeding to the wholesale fish market at Margao. Police informed that Varsha Mayenkar, who was sitting in the cabin, reportedly died on the spot, while Shashikant Gaude, was seriously injured and was admitted in GMC. 
Another occupant of the jeep, Rohini Naik, was discharged after medical treatment at Ponda Sub-district hospital. Jeep driver, Prakash Naik, and two other occupants escaped unhurt.
Police said the lorry was carrying a huge metal body, which was to be delivered at Vasco. The driver had parked the lorry along the NH4A at Khandepar.
According to sources, the mishap occurred as the jeep driver could not see the metal body which was almost a metre outside the carriage of the lorry.
Ponda Police have arrested lorry driver Mohanlal Sahini from Jaipur-Rajasthan and is investigating the case. [H]
