Fr Agnelo South Goa champs

Fr Agnelo YC, Paroda lifted the South Goa Honeybee Friendship Cup trophy and took home a winners cash prize of Rs 20,000 when they registered a 4-2 victory via the tie-breaker against Raia Sporting in the finals at Rosary church grounds, Navelim on Saturday. Runners-up Raia Sporting had to be content with Rs 15,000 and a trophy.

Both the teams played entertaining football as the match was played on a fast pace. There were pulsating moments in both the sessions as the strikers unleashed powerful shots at both ends, only to see their attempts being nullified by the goalkeepers, who stood firm under the goal.

Though Raia Sporting unleashed some dangerous forays in the first ten minutes, it was Fr Agnelo who dominated the proceedings thereafter. Their precise passing on several occasions split the Raia Sporting defence but Cosme Oliveira under the Raia held on gamely.

On one occasion, in the second half, Joston Barbosa’s shot missed the mark narrowly which could have produced a goal in favour of Raia. On the other hand, Cosme Oliveira was kept busy all the while as Fr Agnelo strikers created several moves and sent at least four shots towards the Raia goal where Cosme pulled off some spectacular saves.

As the teams were locked in a goalless draw, the tie-breaker system was adopted. Fr Agnelo scored accurately through Ramchandra Gaoncar, Edwin D’Costa, Sheldon Dias and Marcus Costa. Raia Sporting could find the mark only through Joston Barbosa and Sheldon Dias.

Sports Minister, Mr Ramesh Tawadkar was the chief guest for the prize distribution. Fisheries Minister, Mr Avertano Furtado, Fr Jose Roque Gonsalves, the parish priest of Navelim church and Mr K Gopinath, Deputy General Manager of United Spirits were the guest of honour who distributed the prizes along with Mr Furtado. Raia Sporting’s Joston Barbosa won the man of the match award, while Eliston D’Costa of Fr Agnelo won the individual prize for being the outstanding player of the day. [NT]
