Garbage disposal should start from home, says Dhavalikar
Terming garbage as a growing demon, the PWD Minister, Mr Ramkrishna Dhavalikar on Friday called upon every household to maintain cleanliness by proper disposal of garbage.
He said that such initiatives would in turn lead to clean village, clean district and a clean state.
Mr Dhavalikar was speaking as the chief guest during the inauguration of the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan (NBA) for Salcete taluka at Margao. NBA is a central government sponsored scheme under the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation.
Except the Benaulim MLA, Mr Caitu D Silva, who is ill, all the other South Goa MLAs were present for the inaugural function along with ZP members, sarpanchas and deputy sarpanchas of Salcete.
Mr Dhavalikar, praising the BJP-led government, said, “In the year 2004, the government took many initiatives and built 96,700 toilets in the state. But when the Congress came to power, the initiative was terminated. We will be constructing 90,000 more toilets at anganwadis, government primary schools and high schools under this scheme.’’
He also mentioned that the panchayats in the state would be provided funds to build such toilets. The main objective of the NBA is to bring about an improvement in the general quality of life in the rural areas and to motivate people and panchayat raj institutions to promote sustainable sanitation facilities through awareness and health education.
The Margao MLA and former chief minister, Mr Digambar Kamat said that it is only a central government scheme meant to improve the health related facilities. He said that since Goa is small, it would help in implementation.
The Fatorda MLA, Mr Vijay Sardesai opined that the city areas should also be covered under the scheme as there are many schools in the city which need such facilities, to which the minister consented. [NT]
