GFDC’s Navelim centre to boost women’s soccer

 

 Seventy young girls from the schools in and around Margao and Navelim gathered at Our Lady of Rosary school grounds in Navelim for the inaugural ceremony of the 4th football development centre of GFDC which will be an exclusive centre for girls.
 
The centre was inaugurated at the hands of the MLA of Velim Mr Benjamin  D’ Silva, recently. 
Ms Victoria D’Souza, Principal, Rosary Higher Secondary School, Navelim welcomed the gathering for this momentous day for Navelim.
Mr  Elvis Gomes, Member Secretary GFDC and Executive Director, SAG welcomed and explained the purpose of beginning the Navelim centre. He  said that in the past the Goan women brought glory to the game of football both at the nationals and also internationally, however in recent times he felt this segment was on the decline and it was the resolve of the GFDC to harness this talent present among the Goan girls through development of such centres.
GFDC Chairman, Dr Rufino Monteiro explained to the gathering present as to how serious the Chief Minister’s initiative of promoting football in Goa was taken up by GFDC by starting the 4th Football Development Centre in a record time of two months and recalling how the Late Rekha Karapurkar and her team brought Goan Women’s football to the topmost and promised to develop girls football along with Beach Football and Futsal in Goa. Dr Rufino also said that he wants to make Goa the Football Capital of India and he also informed those present that over 150 girls in this age category were already undergoing training at the three centres that have already been started alongside the 400 boys at the grassroots level.
Whilst speaking on the occasion, the MLA and Chairman of the Goa Referee Association complimented Dr Rufino Monteiro for  working tirelessly to put the grassroots development plan of football in the state of Goa by opening centres all over the state. He also said that Navelim has been well known in the field of sports and particularly in football especially in the girls arena and it has got a further boost by being recognised by the GFDC to further the promotion of the game right from the grassroots level. 
Mr Benjamin D’Silva was all praise for the initiatives that the present government has taken to see that Goa enjoys the status of the number one in football through the formation of GFDC.
Savio Messias, Agnelo Fonseca, Maria Rebello, Sheikh Suleman Karol, Shantaram Naik, GFDC members along with  Bishut Themudo and Anthony Pango, Executive Members of GFA, Ms Maria Goretti, Jt Director Accounts, SAG and Oswald D’Costa were present for the occasion.  Mr Peter Coutinho proposed the vote of thanks.
