The Tillari irrigation project coordination committee has decided to stop release of water in the canal for one month every year to carryout maintenance work of the Tillari canal.
This decision has been taken after breach of the Tillari canal recently.
Speaking to mediapersons, Sawantwadi MLA Deepak Kesarkar, who is part of the Tillari coordination committee between Maharashtra and Goa, said "We have decided to stop water release in the canal for one month of every year to take up maintenance work".
He also said that the Maharashtra government had insisted on keeping two months for maintenance work whereas the Goa government demanded only one month per year, which was finally agreed to.
He also said that the Maharashtra government has requested the Goa government to create a sufficient storage facility in the state in order to allow it to take up maintenance works of the canal.
Last month, the main Tillari canal, which supplies water to North Goa farmers, breached at Sateli-Bhedshi in Maharashtra. Kesarkar said that the Maharashtra government has started investigations to find out the reason for breach. BJP had demanded for a CBI inquiry into the sub standard construction of the canal. [TOI]
