GOACAN urges checks on underweight cylinders

Goa Civic and Consumer Action Network (GOACAN) Coordinator Roland Martins has urged authorities to keep a check on the supply of underweight cylinders.
He was speaking during a meeting in Ponda on Thursday which was convened by Ponda Mamlatdar Amol Gaonkar following requests from the GOACAN to discuss the issues concerning customers and dealers. A review meeting will be held after three months.
Martins said the issue of underweight cylinders was brought to his notice by various customers throughout the State.
“Customers have brought to our notice that one LPG cylinder is enough for a month but sometimes it gets over in 10 days. The reason according to me is that the cylinders supplied are underweight as against its original weight (gas) 14.2 kg.”
“According to information, people engaged in the business fraudulently remove gas from the cylinder before it is supplied to a customer, who hardly have knowledge that the gas has been siphoned from the cylinder and realize only when the gas cylinder is over in 10 days. There is need to weigh cylinders before delivery,” he said.
A LPG dealer from Marcel, Siddharth Palang, said it was a difficult task for dealers to weigh each and every cylinder before delivery. “We receive 300 cylinders in a batch and we normally weigh randomly 10 per cent of the cylinders. The LPG company accepts cylinders if they are underweight.”
“If there are any dealers involved in any such illegalities, then action has to be taken,” he said.
Martins also raised concern over the facility of direct cash subsidy into bank accounts of customers who have registered their Aadhaar cards with LPG dealers.
The Centre had chosen districts that had maximum Aadhaar enrolments and since North Goa has maximum coverage, it was chosen in the first phase. “Currently, this facility is only in North Goa and there are chances of misuse of subsidized cylinders,” said Martins.
The meeting was attended by officers from government departments like Civil Supplies, Weights and Measures, Fire and Emergency Services and officers from LPG companies, LPG dealers from Ponda taluka. [H]
