Goan origin priest dies at Dharwad hospital
Former Vicar General of Diocese of Belgaum and the priest of Goan origin Msgr Evarist Mascarenhas (86) died at Lourdes Hospital, Dharwad, on Sunday evening.
The funeral will be held on Monday at Fatima Cathedral, Belgaum. Bishop of Belgaum Dr Peter Machado, who has expressed grief over the demise of the octogenarian priest as loss to the Diocese of Belgaum, will preside over the funeral services.
Msgr Mascarenhas had served the Diocese of Belgaum as the Vicar General since 1977. Born in Sholapur-Sholapur, Maharastra, he studied at Papal Seminary, Kandy and was ordained in 1953 at Trincomalee and was first appointed as assistant Parish Priest at Guldegud Mission for 14 years.
He also served at St Joseph’s Church, Hubli, Fatima Cathedral, Belgaum, St Ignatius Church, Gadag. For two terms, he was the rector at St Michael’s Seminary. [H]
