Goan special athletes win medals in floor hockey


The Special Olympics Bharat’s floor hockey teams performed exceptionally well to bag one gold and two silver medals at the 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games, which were held at Pyeong Chang, South Korea from January 26 to February 5.
From among 29 male and 29 female special athletes and 15 coaches, Goa was represented by three Special Athletes namely Aviraj Anil Kalangutkar (School for Appropriate Learning – Panjim), Puja Krishna Resham (Keshav Seva Sadhna – Bicholim), Velancia Fernandes (Gujarati Samaj – Margao), one coach – Carlton Maxwell Gomez and Coach cum HOD – Mr Victor R Vaz.
Goan Special Athletes who won medals in floor hockey are: Puja Krishna Resham (gold); Velancia Fernandes and Aviraj Anil Kalangutkar (silver).
The Special Athletes and coaches were identified at the   national championship held at Himachal Pradesh and thereafter they underwent three preparatory camps held at Shilaroo and Narkhanda (Himachal Pradesh), Delhi and final camp at Bilaspur and Manali (Himachal Pradesh). Based on their performance they were selected to represent Special Olympics Bharat at the 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games. [NT]
