Goods worth Rs 3.5 lakh seized in raid on hardware distributor
In a major raid, officials of the Legal Metrology Department on Tuesday raided a hardware distributor near the Maruti Temple at Rumdamol-Davorlim and seized goods worth Rs 3.5 lakh.
Acting on a minor complaint from a customer and also acting suo moto against the distributor, Legal Metrology Controller V R Naik said the officials raided the distributor after it was found he was selling sanitary ware and plumbing fittings without the manufacturer’s MRP. “The sanitary ware and plumbing materials had no MRP from the manufacture. The distributor has put his MRP. When the manufacturer had not put his MRP, it gives liberty to the distributor to charge the rate of his choice”, Naik said.
It is learnt that the Legal Metrology team first raided the retail hardware shop in the city here and upon inquiries raided the distributor after the retailer maintained that the goods were supplied by the distributor.
Replying to a question, Naik said members of the public should bring such cases to the notice of Legal Metrology officials to crack a whip on such malpractices. He said the department will prosecute the distributor Sushant Jain in the court if he does not agree for compounding of the offence.
Assistant Controller, South Goa, Prasad Shirodkar said the raiding team also seized 10 packages of the hardware item costing Rs 5500. Further investigations are on. [H]
