Government in process of banning plastic in phased manner, says Alina
The Minister for Environment, Ms Alina Saldanha on Thursday announced that the government is in the process of banning plastic in the state in a phased manner.
Further stating that the government also intends to make dumping of plastic garbage in public places a cognisable offence, the Minister for Environment said that the government is looking at options like use of bio-degradable plastic. “However before making any legal provisions, we will have to put in place the infrastructure necessary to treat garbage,” she noted.
Replying to a related question, Ms Saldanha informed the House during the Question Hour that presently the plastic waste is taken at Sarvan, in North Goa and Kakoda in South Goa for recycling. “We have constituted monitoring cum working committee on solid waste management and municipalities would be provided financial assistance through the department of urban development so as to undertake cleanliness drives,” she informed.
