Govt gives Rs 5k/month for armed forces’ war widows

Panaji: The state government, under a new scheme, will provide Rs5,000 a month for life to widows of armed forces personnel. The person receiving the assistance must be of Goan origin or born in Goa and domiciled in the state of Goa for a minimum period of 15 years.The ‘war widows’ will essentially mean the legally wedded wife of an armed forces personnel martyred during international wars the nation has fought since Independence up to December 31, 1999. Widows of martyrs from the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force will be eligible for the assistance. The scheme does not include defence security corps, general reserve engineering force, lok sahayak sena, para military force and central armed police force. The assistance will be provided to the eligible widows through the secretary of department of sainik welfare.
Those availing the benefit will have to submit their birth certificate, residence certificate, marriage certificate and certificate of service of the deceased, battle casualty report, death certificate, and pension book.”On receipt of the application, the department of sainik welfare shall send the case to the government through administrative department for consideration and approval. After obtaining approval of the government, the financial assistance shall be paid through ECS and credited into the bank account of the beneficiary on a monthly basis, for life. The beneficiary will be required to provide a life certificate every year for continuation of the financial assistance,” states the scheme. [TOI]
