Govt racing to complete Margao sewerage project
With the government setting 2014 as the deadline to complete Margao’s long delayed sewerage project, the Goa Sewerage Development Corporation has taken up work on the Malbhat and Aquem area of the city, besides Rumdamol and Davorlim on the city outskirts, but officials say the progress of work would largely depend on allocation of funds by the State government.
The Corporation has also floated a tender for micro tunneling of the sewerage line from Apollo Victor hospital to the Sewage Treatment Plant, Sirvodem at a cost of Rs 60 crore.
Officials said that laying of the branch line in the Malbhat area of the city is almost complete, while work is in full swing to lay the line in the Aquem area. “The Corporation has taken up work on laying of the pipeline running into nearly 26 kms. This includes the Malbhat and Aquem area, besides the villages of Rumdamol and Davorlim”, an official informed.
The Corporation has simultaneously taken up work on the main line which will connect the STP via micro tunneling near the Apollo Victor Hospital. “The tender for the 3.2 km micro tunneling of the line from Apollo Victor hospital to the STP at Sirvodem has ben floated and the work order will be issued in January. We expect work to commence on the micro tunneling project immediately”, the official said.
In the neighbouring villages of Rumdamol and Davorlim, the Corporation has completed 10 km sewage line in Rumdamol in phase I, while simultaneously taking up work in Davorlim village.
While the Corporation has taken up work on the Malbhat, Aquem, Rumdamol and Davorlim areas, JICA will execute the works in the heart of the town and other balance areas of the commercial capital.
Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar during his visit to Navelim a month ago had promised to give top priority for Margao sewerage problem since it has turned out the major cause of contamination of the River Sal.
In fact, officials of the PWD and Sewage Corporation are hoping that the government would allocate necessary funds for the project keeping in mind the projects already underway. While the northern and central parts of Margao city stands covered by the underground sewerage project, work is presently underway in the city’s densely populated areas of Malbhat and Aquem. [H]
