Govt to bring law barring active politicians from sports associations

The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar on Thursday informed the state legislative assembly that the state would enact a legislation to bar active politicians from holding posts in sports associations. Mr Parrikar said this while intervening in a reply to the queries raised by the members of the House during discussion on demands for departments of Sports and Tribal Welfare. He said that his government was not in favour of politicians heading sports bodies. “We are not interested in taking over any sport body,” he added. Earlier, the Sport and Tribal Welfare Minister, Mr Ramesh Tawadkar told the assembly that the government would favour identifying sporting talents in young children and then providing them professional coaching so as to develop their talents and enable them to contest at the highest level.
