Govt to reconstruct Ponda bus terminus

Ponda: PWD and transport minister, Sudin Dhavalikar has stated that the government has decided to reconstruct the Kadamba Transport Corporation’s (KTC) bus terminus at Ponda with new amenities. He said the department had decided to give a facelift to the terminus in 2012 by restructuring bus bays, construction of offices, waiting lounge for interstate passengers besides rest rooms for drivers and conductors for overnight stay, but the plan was shelved temporarily.”The need for restructuring was necessitated as the existing construction was in a dilapidated condition owing to poor maintenance,” the minister informed. The bus stand was thrown open to the public in 1992 by the then chief minister, Ravi Naik.
It remained unutilized for a short period as the commuters had to take buses from the old bus stand to the new one. In 2000, then chief minister Manohar Parrikar made it operational by launching free shuttle service between old bus stand and KTC terminus.
Subsequently, shuttle services were called off and bus transporters operating on the Ponda-Panaji route were instructed to pick up passengers at old bus stand and then proceed to the new bus stand.Ever since, the bus stand was in operation. It was in the news for wrong reasons too as part of an overhead concrete beam collapsed injuring a commuter. [TOI]
