Govt urged to ban use of plastic

The two legislators of Porvorim and Calangute have requested the State government to ban the use of plastic in market places and all across the State.
Calangute MLA Michael Lobo and Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte joined hands in a garbage cleanliness drive undertaken by residents of Parra and the Parra Citizens Forum Association in the village.
Led by Lobo, Saligao ZP Member Prakash Naik, Parra Sarpanch Delilah Lobo, other panchas and students of Sacred Heart of Jesus School, residents marched through the streets of Parra to clean up the garbage dumped in the  village and were joined by Khaunte and Vasudev Korgaonkar.
Khaunte made a fervent request to the State government to ban the use of plastic in the State as it has been posing a threat to environment.
“We have frequently raised the garbage issue in the Assembly, but now the government needs to be serious about the issue. After mining has been stopped, Goa’s economy is now largely dependent on tourism. But do we have the requisite infrastructure to cater to the needs of the tourists? Tourists visiting beaches are taken aback to see garbage strewn all over the place,” said Khaunte.
Lobo claimed that despite promises from the chief minister and the environment minister, the ban on plastic is yet to be a reality in the State. “The issue is very serious and the government needs to take immediate steps to ban plastic in Goa,” he added. [H]
