GRA demands ban on illegal cow slaughter

The Govansh Raksha Abhiyan (GRA) a non-profit organisation dedicated to the welfare of bovines, has called for a complete ban on illegal cow slaughter in the state.

The movement that is planning to hold a rally in Panaji in April, to draw public attention to the protection of all ruminating animals, has also called for redefinition of the Goa Slaughter House Act, 1978, and for harsher punishment to those found guilty of illegal
slaughter.

At a recent meeting in Valpoi, members said that slaughter was rampant in several talukas, specifically Tiswadi, Bardez and Salcete, although it is officially allowed only at the government abattoir at the Goa Meat Complex, Usgao, Ponda. Members said this illegal slaughtering besides being unhygienic, is going on due
to lax laws. [NT]
