GSCZMA, GSBDB inspect ship repair yard at Chicalim
The Goa State Coastal Zone Management Authority (GSCZMA) and Goa State Bio-diversity Board (GSBDB) along with Mormugao Block Development Officer, officials of Land Survey and members of Chicalim Villagers Action Committee (CVAC) on Friday inspected Abhishek Engineering ship repair yard at Chicalim.
“We have been fighting against the ‘blatant illegality’ that has been going on at the ship repair yard since 2010,” stated CVAC General Secretary Rui Manuel Araujo.
“Despite various authorities issuing show cause notices and stop orders, shipyard owner, Uday Naik, failed to adhere to the orders,” alleged Araujo.
“As the shipyard owner showed scant respect to the orders of the concerned authorities, we had to knock the doors of Environment Minister Alina Saldanha and BDO submitted its report about the illegalities committed by the yard,” stated Araujo. Araujo further said acting on the report, Saldanha directed GSCZMA and GSBDB to inspect the yard and file a compliance report to initiate necessary action against the yard.
Speaking to Herald, Dr Arvind Untawale of GSCZMA said it was a normal inspection and has directed the Land Survey Department to conduct survey and submit the report to GSCZMA for further action.
GSBDB Member Secretary Dr Nitin Sawant, who was present for the inspection, told Herald that he will write to all the panchayats not to grant any NOC/permission to shipyards without obtaining NOC from the Bio-diversity Board.
When contacted, shipyard owner, Naik, stated that he has all the required permissions and he has not involved in any illegalities. [H]
