GSL’s Agri Co-operative project launched at Canacona

 

 In an effort to enhance the livelihood opportunities through increasing agriculture productivity, Goa Shipyard Limited in association with the National CSR Hub as the executing agency has launched an Agriculture Co-operative Project, as a CSR initiative, at Canacona Taluka.
Ramesh Tawadkar, Minister Sports, Youth Affairs and Tribal Welfare, Government of Goa inaugurated the project in the presence of RAdm Vineet Bakhshi VSM, CMD, Goa Shipyard Ltd and other officials.
The project with a duration of 3 years is aimed at empowering community for employment generation through nurturing agriculture and allied activities, resource mobilisation and fund raising for entrepreneurial initiatives. 
Lauding the initiative of GSL for spearheading such community initiatives, the minister said almost 80% of population in the hinterland of Goa, is engaged in agriculture, but due to inadequate irrigation facilities, agricultural activities are restricted to seasonal kharif crops.
The Minister said the villagers are not engaged in extensive cattle farming, dairy or poultry and most of these products are imported from neighbouring states as a result employment opportunities are getting restricted.  
He further said with a proper agriculture extension support system, crop diversification and by following allied activities the agriculture productivity in the region can be increased.
Speaking on the occasion CMD GSL said “This initiative will see the project developed into a sustainable project”. Bakhshi said GSL would provide necessary financial support under its CSR to develop the project. Crop rotation of paddy with vegetables and pulses and diversification with other agriculture activities like vermi compost, poultry, Honey beekeeping and dairy would possibly enhance yield further the CMD stated.
