Guardian Angel, St Anthony’s qualify for GFA 2nd Division League

Guardian Angel SC emerged winners of the 3rd Division play-off when they defeated St Anthony’s SC, Colva 5-3 via the tie-breaker in the finals played at Cuncolim grounds on Wednesday.
Both the teams qualified for the 2nd Division, though it was the Guardian Angel team that proved to be the better of the lot in this Zone by winning the finals which was watched by a sizeable number of spectators.
Both the teams played an exciting 1-1 draw during the normal period of play.
Guardian Angel shot into the lead in the 33rd minute of play through a rocket like shot taken by their striker Brison Gomes.
Receiving a through pass from the flank off Myron Fernandes which split the entire Colva defence, Brison Gomes made a dash for the ball and then after taking two steps forward unleashed a powerful shot that had no answer from St Anthony’s keeper Denzil Dias.
The match then rose to some dizzy heights and St Anthony’s who were prevented from scoring by the strong Guardian Angel defence were left stranded in the 39th minute of play as Colva scored with gusto.
Jovisco Fernandes ran down the middle after eluding a couple of Guardian Angel defenders and on seeing Joao Fernandes, unmarked, passed the ball to him who fired to the corner of the rival nets to level the score.
St Anthony’s Jesus Cardozo and Collin Fernandes did well in the defence while in the midfield it was Ryan Fernandes who played a major role.
Their strike force consisting of Romario and Joao Fernandes always proved to be dangerous when the ball came to their feet but it was the strong Guardian Angel defence that foiled them at the crucial time of hitting the ball towards the goal.
On the other hand, Guardian Angels’s Aston Fernandes, Myron Fernandes and Brison Gomes along with Melito Fernandes wove rings round the Guardian Angel territory in the second session and came very close in finding the mark. The Colva keeper Denzil Dias proved to be a hard nut to crack despite the several attacks that were made by the Guardian Angel team even in the last few minutes of play.
As the teams were involved in a deadlock, the tie-breaker system was adopted in which Guardian Angel proved to be better shooters scoring accurately through Aston Fernandes, Vishal Rodrigues, Melvito Fernandes and Marcus D’Costa.
St Anthony’s Colva could find the mark only through Gladson Rodrigues and Romario Fernandes. [NT]
