HC takes suo motu cognisance of Sonshi issue

Panjim: The High Court of Bombay at Goa has taken suo motu cognisance of the media reports on
Sonshi village in Sattari which is adversely affected due to mining ore transportation and issued notices to the State government and Goa Pollution Control Board (GSPCB).The court said that media reports are fit to take suo motu cognisance and asked the government and GSPCB to submit its reply in a week.The court has also sought a report from the local police station on reports that have appeared in the media for last three days.Herald had broken the story of affected villagers and the problems faced by them.
The 45 villagers who were protesting against the air pollution are still in judicial custody despite a local court having granted them bail on Saturday evening, as furnishing a surety of Rs 4.5 lakh is not possible for the villagers.The villagers are complaining of major dust pollution in the village due to ore transportation and also loss of ground water. Villagers claim that the wells have dried up due to mining operations.Former Chief Minister and local MLA Pratapsingh Rane said that it is a complete failure of the government. [H]
