Heavy rain wreaks havoc in Bicholim

Bicholim: Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds caused many trees to get uprooted, in the Bicholim taluka, on Thursday.Trees were uprooted in Sakhali, Mayem, Arvalem, Nanora, Mulgao, Lamgao and surrounding areas.A house belonging to Shobha Verekar from Patto-Mayem collapsed due to the heavy showers on Thursday. Verekar hails from a poor background and is the sole provider for her own children and three nieces. Villagers have asked that social institutions and social workers help the family.There were also incidents of traffic jams due to trees falling across roads. Many people suffered losses to their properties as their roofs partially gave way and their plantations were destroyed. [TOI]
