‘Helmets for riders compulsory on all roads’
Transport minister Ramkrishna Dhavlikar said it is compulsory for two-wheeler riders and pillion riders to wear helmets on all roads in Goa but added that it is for the traffic police to decide when they will start issuing challans and fining two-wheeler riders who violate the rule.
Talking to TOI on the sidelines of a function in Calangute on Tuesday evening, he said that although the wearing of helmets is compulsory as per the Motor Vehicles Rules, the traffic police and the RTO have only been issuing challans and fining people for not wearing helmets on highways. He declined to give a time-frame as to when the traffic police would start issuing challans to riders not wearing helmets, saying it does not come under his ministry. [TOI]
