House demolished at Sada amidst cries of women

Vasco: Tension prevailed at Headland Sada in Mormugao on Tuesday morning after a family whose house was slated for demolition, along with their relatives got into a heated arguments with municipal staff and tried to prevent the demolition squad from demolishing their over two decades old house.Some of them even threatened to take the law into their own hands if authorities make any attempt to demolish their structure citing it as illegal.According to information, a resident of upper jetty, behind IOC quarters in Headland Sada had complained against his neighbour namely Salim Shaikh illegally constructed a structure using laterite stone on government land without permission.
In response to the complaint, Shaikh started knocking the doors of officials concerned with the plea that it was an existing structure that was constructed some 30 years ago. Shaikh also filed a petition before the High Court and last year High Court dismissed the petition filed by Shaikh and passed an order in favour of the Municipality following which the Chief Officer of Mormugao Municipal Council sought for demolition squad and the demolition was fixed on Tuesday.Thus the moment demolition squad reached at the site and started preparing for demolition, thes Shaikh family and his other relatives rushed to the site and started confronting the demolition squad as to why only their structure is being demolished when whole of Headland is housing illegal houses.
