House tax abolition for panchayats likely by Ganesh Chaturthi festival

Goa Panchayati Raj minister Laxmikant Parsekar has said that the state government will try to fulfill his party's promise to abolish house tax in panchayat areas by the Ganesh Chaturthi festival. When contacted, Parsekar told STOI that the government has made a total of the taxes collected by village panchayats in Goa for the last five years and taken the yearly average of taxes collected. The corresponding amount of about Rs 8 crore will be released to the panchayats to compensate for the abolition of house taxes in their areas, Parsekar said. Asked when the government would implement the decision, Parsekar said the file had been sent to the finance department and he hoped to implement the decision by Ganesh Chaturthi. The festival is on September 19. [TOI]
