I-League teams to inspect Duler stadium today

The representatives of all the four Goan I-League clubs will inspect the astro turf ground at Duler stadium, Mapusa on Tuesday, in view of the unavailability of Nehru stadium, Fatorda-Margao,
to hold the remainder of the I-League matches, this was disclosed by GFA’s acting general secretary, Mr Alvaro  Pinho, Monday.
Mr Pinho informed The Navhind Times, after a meeting at Dempo House, Monday, that the representatives of all the four I-League clubs were present at today’s meeting and that it was decided to inspect the Duler grounds and see the possibility of holding I-league matches. The inspection at Duler is likely to take place at 10am.
Mr Pinho disclosed that certain minimum requirements are to be met as per the guidelines of the AIFF for holding these matches.
“The four I-League club representatives will inspect whether these minimum requirements are met or not and then accordingly get in touch with the AIFF with their suggestions,” he disclosed further.
In fact, all four Goan I-League clubs – Dempo, Salgaocar, Sporting Clube and Churchill Bros have agreed to shifting the I-League and Pro League matches to Duler stadium, as Nehru stadium at Fatorda is presently undergoing renovation in view of the Lusofonia Games, which will be held in November 2013.
The club believed that Duler was the best option available right now as it was equipped with the newly-laid FIFA turf and could be the best alternative for both I-League and Goa League.
Tilak stadium at Vasco which was originally conceived to be the I-League alternative is not yet ready and may be a decision could be taken on that venue only next month.
Right now Duler suits the teams’ interest and the clubs have agreed in unison to shift base to the north venue, subject to inspection.
Teams have been practicing at the new-look Duler stadium and the pitch will need time to settle down as games are played on it. Experts believed that the granules will also take time to settle down.
Meanwhile, Tuesday’s Pro League match between Dempo and Salgaocar will be the last at Nehru stadium for some time and thereafter matches will be shifted to Duler. The refurbishment work at Fatorda stadium is in full swing for Lusofonia Games and it was learnt that the pitch will be dug up shortly with machineries being already procured for the same.
Meanwhile, there have been requests to AIFF from Goan clubs Salgaocar, Churchill and Sporting Clube to postpone their Round 12 home matches of the I-League scheduled to be played on December 22/23, in view on unavailability of Nehru stadium.
On December 22, Salgaocar take on Sporting Clube while Churchill Bros and Air-India face off on December 23. Dempo play Pailan away on December 22. [NT]
