Illegal structures at Malbhat face Margao Municipal Council axe
The Margao Municipal Council (MMC), in a demolition drive undertaken by it on Wednesday, razed several illegal structures near the Konkan railway station, Malbhat, Margao. The structures which had earlier been demolished by the MMC had come up again in the same place, necessitating the latest operation.
The MMC team led by chief officer Srinet Kothwale, chairperson Arthur D'Silva and deputy chairperson Pratima Coutinho, inspected the hutments at Colmorod, Navelim, and warned the occupants to clear the illegal structures within 24 hours. Speaking to mediapersons, Coutinho said that she urged the chief officer to raze all illegal structures in the area if they fail to do so on their own.
"The hutments, which were razed by the MMC way back in 2009, have surfaced again on comunidade land. There is also an illegal scrapyard set up in the area which poses a nuisance to the residents. The area has turned out to be very unhygienic, as the hutment dwellers defecate in the open in the absence of any toilet facilities. I had submitted a memorandum to the chief officer of the MMC some three months ago urging him to take action against the illegal hutments," Coutinho, who represents the ward, said. [TOI]
