In CM’s absence, MGP foresees early polls in State

Panjim: Taking into account the current political situation in the State, in the absence of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, the Maharastrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) on Wednesday stated that it foresees early elections. The party went to say that it will support BJP as long as Manohar Parrikar is the Chief Minister, and that they are ready to contest the Lok Sabha and Assembly polls on their own.“Looking at the present political situation, it looks like there might be early elections in the State. The situation is very tense and this being a coalition government anything can happen. We have begun preparations to go it alone in the Lok Sabha polls and Assembly polls if they come early,” MGP President Pandurang (Deepak) Dhavalikar said, speaking to the media after the party’s central committee meeting He said, “MGP will be a coalition partner in the government only till Manohar Parrikar is the Chief Minister of the State. At present the situation is grim and we all pray that the Chief Minister recovers and comes back.”
The party president further said that news of a merger with BJP is false and warned of action against the media spreading the rumours. “The media should contact us for correct information before filing any news reports. There are attempts to malign the image of Goa’s oldest party,” he added.Over the last few days there had been much speculation of a possible merger of MGP into BJP. However, the party’s central committee is firm that maintaining MGP’s identity is supreme and merger with the BJP will destroy MGP’s identity.“There is no question of a merger with BJP. All the news that you are hearing is false and is done for political motives. Our party members and leaders are united. In the recently concluded central committee meeting possible merger was not discussed. We want to retain the existence of the party in the State as an independent political entity,” MGP general secretary Lavoo Mamledar said. [H]
